Embodied Fighting is an ongoing project in collaboration with Colombian documentary photographer Carlos Saavedra.
It explores amateur mixed martial art (MMA) cage fights in the United Kingdom. Many fighters come from an abusive past, and use the sport to process their history and achieve glory. Athletes and spectators converge in an evening of uninhibited abandon. The nights are a microcosm of English culture, providing a unique space where it is acceptable for spectators and athletes both to put forth their rawest, most volatile selves.
In addition to photographing the intense atmosphere, a large part of the project is photographing individual athletes directly after their fight, regardless of the outcome. By doing so we hope to capture the raw adrenaline fighters experience after the physical experience of combat.
